Know the basics
Before you start, you need to have a grasp on what is involved. ATV motocross, or ATV racing, is a form of off-road motorcycle racing on four-wheeled vehicles known as ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles). Races are on dirt tracks with various obstacles, including jumps, tight corners, and whoops sections.
Get the right gear
Safety should you your #1 priority. Invest in high-quality safety gear before hitting the tracks, including:
- a helmet
- goggles
- gloves
- boots
- body armor
Choose your ATV
You need an ATV specifically designed for racing. Models specifically designed for motocross are typically lighter and more powerful than recreational ATVs. Consider your skill level and the class you intend to race in when you choose an ATV.
Learn the racing rules
ATV racing rules may vary by organization and event. However, they generally cover factors like:
- equipment specifications
- race formats
- scoring systems
Understanding these rules is essential for both safety and success.

Like any sport, getting the hang of ATV motocross comes with practice. Spend as much time as you can on the track to get comfortable with your ATV and riding techniques. Focus on mastering turns, jumps, and starts, as well as developing your overall racing strategy.

Joining a local ATV racing club offers you the opportunity to train, race, and network with other racers! It’s also a great way to learn about upcoming races and events in the area.
Attend races and events
Watching races on TV is one thing, but it’s a whole nother thing to see it live! Seeing live races allows you to observe different racing styles, learn from experienced racers, and understand the competitive environment. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to connect with the ATV motocross community.
